Bideford & North Devon

A scenic and largely rural region, North Devon is bordered by Exmoor National Park, renowned for its striking country and coastal views and herds of wild deer. The North Devon coastline, studded with tiny harbour-towns, excellent beaches and breathtaking cliff-top walks, is so picturesque that it has been designated
“an area of outstanding natural beauty”. Bideford is an attractive town situated on the banks of the Torridge Estuary and the old main road has a famous 24 arched bridge crossing the Torridge which links the town to its aptly named neighbour, East the Water. During the 16th and 17th centuries Bideford was one of the busiest ports in England handling cargoes of all kinds but especially the trade in tobacco and cotton from the New World. Bideford still has a working harbour, pleasant small streets with a variety of shops and like its larger sister town Barnstable it has a Pannier Market with its own Butchers Row where local farmers still bring their dairy produce to sell. The Quayside is lined with trees and it is a pleasant place to view the
fishing and cargo boats as they go about their work.
