Christmas Cracker in Cumbria

Our hotel is on the borders of Northumberland and Cumbria ideally situated for exploring the Pennines and the Eden Valley. With such wonderful scenery, this tour will be a real treat especially for train enthusiasts as we will be travelling on three of the best lines in the area. The village of Gilsland sits on Hadrian’s Wall, with half the village in Cumbria and half in Northumberland. Take a walk around the village, take in some of the beautiful heritage buildings, the Sulphur Springs and the Popping Stones in the hotel grounds

Tour Highlights

Monday – Enjoy a leisurely drive with a lunch break enroute, arriving at our hotel in the afternoon.

Tuesday – Travel to Newcastle upon Tyne, a popular tourist town. With free time, you could visit the Cathedral in the north of the town, Grainger Town in the centre of the city with its many listed Victorian buildings and the Grainger Market a renowned local market with plenty of opportunities to start your Christmas shopping. The Metro is one of the biggest shopping centres in Europe. From here we travel on to Hexham a beautiful historic market town for the opportunity of seeing the fabulous market here too.

Wednesday – The historic town of Durham has superb buildings with great character, including the impressive Cathedral and castle. With a local market and lots of heritage buildings there really is lots to see and do.

Thursday – Dumfries, Robert Burns House where he spent the last years of life before he died in 1796. Each year his birthday is celebrated on Burns Night with Whisky, Haggis and Merriment. Some of his most famous poetry included, Red Rose and Auld Lang Syne. Then onto Carlisle, take some time to visit the Cathedral, with its stunning Stained Glass, painted ceilings and very distinctive crypt.

Friday – Travelling back with a lunch break enroute, arriving home in the afternoon
